Otter alternative

Otter alternative for Mac: call notes without a bot, and the work around them

Otter is a meeting library with a free plan and a notetaker that can join your calls. Cachejay records calls on your Mac with no participant added, then keeps the screen, agent sessions and projects around them for your AI apps.

Which one to pick

Evaluate Otter if you want a free plan, phone recording of in-person meetings, a searchable meeting library for a whole team, or a notetaker that attends calls you can’t join. Its free minutes may be enough for occasional calls.

Evaluate Cachejay if you don’t want a participant added to client calls, or the answer you need often sits outside the meeting: the doc you had open, a coding session, the thread you read after. See call capture and agent context.

If you already chose bot-free notes and are weighing Granola too, that comparison covers note templates and mobile capture. All comparisons are on the alternatives page.

Where the audio and text go

Cachejay turns speech into text on the Mac while you talk; both sides are finished in the cloud, and transcripts and notes sync by default. Hosted summaries process text with an AI provider, and connected assistants receive only what they retrieve. See Cachejay's data controls.

Otter processes recordings in its cloud and keeps them in your account. Its privacy policy says it may train its AI on de-identified audio and transcriptions. If a call is under NDA or a client asked not to be recorded by a third party, read that policy and your client’s terms before using either product.

Try the same review task

Use a meeting you are allowed to transcribe. In each product, check one explicit decision, one action with an owner, and one suggestion that was never agreed. Then ask your AI app a question that needs both the call and something outside it, such as “what did we agree, and is it in the spec yet?”

The meeting follow-up guide gives you prompts and a fictional practice transcript. More on bot-free meeting notes.

Questions

Does Otter have a free plan?

Yes. Otter Basic is free with 300 minutes a month and up to 30 minutes per conversation. Pro lists 1,200 minutes a month and 90 minutes per conversation.

Does Otter need a bot in the meeting?

Not always. Otter Notetaker joins calls from your calendar as a participant, and Otter’s desktop app for Mac and Windows records without a bot. Check your auto-join settings if you connected a calendar.

Does Otter train on my recordings?

Otter’s privacy policy lists training its AI on de-identified audio recordings and on transcriptions, under consent or legitimate interests. Enterprise customers are covered by their own terms.

Is Cachejay only a meeting notetaker?

No. It takes call notes with no bot, and also remembers what was on your screen, your coding-agent sessions and your projects, so the AI apps you use can look any of it up.
