ChatGPT memory not working? Every cause and the fix

ChatGPT forgot something, the memory summary is blank, or it’s stuck on generating. Here is how memory actually works now, the reasons it fails, and how to fix each one in a couple of minutes.

Checked against OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT help page on October 31, 2026. Menu names vary by plan and app version.

The parts of ChatGPT memory

“Memory” in ChatGPT is several features, and most problems come from one of them being off:

  • Saved memories: facts you asked ChatGPT to remember, or that it saved itself. Stored apart from your chats.
  • Reference chat history: lets ChatGPT draw on past conversations. OpenAI says there’s no separate storage limit for it, but it picks what it thinks is relevant.
  • Memory summary: a high-level view of what ChatGPT may use about you. OpenAI says it “does not necessarily include every detail”.
  • Improved memory vs legacy saved memories: newer accounts get an automatically updated summary; some can switch back to the older list of individual memories.
  • Project-only memory: chats in a Project can see each other but not the rest of your history, and the other way round.

Find them under Settings › Personalization. If a control isn’t there, OpenAI says it may not be available for your plan, region or workspace yet.

The two-minute check

  1. Is Memory on? Settings › Personalization. Turn on Memory, and Reference chat history if you have it. Note that turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history.
  2. Was it a temporary chat? Temporary chats never create or update memories, even with personalization on. An “Unpersonalized” temporary chat doesn’t read them either.
  3. Is the chat in a Project with project-only memory? Then it can’t see anything outside that Project.
  4. Is your saved-memory list full? If you see “Memory is full”, nothing new is saved until you make room. See ChatGPT memory full.
  5. Work or school account? Workspace admins control memory settings. If one is missing, ask them.
  6. Ask it. In a new chat: “What do you remember about me?” That shows what it can actually use, which can differ from the summary.

Memory summary empty or stuck on generating

An empty summary is normal on a new account, right after turning memory on, or when Reference chat history is off: there’s nothing to summarise yet. It fills in as you chat.

If it’s stuck on “generating” or won’t load, OpenAI doesn’t document a fix. These are the steps that tend to clear it, in order:

  1. Reload the page with a hard refresh (Cmd+Shift+R or Ctrl+Shift+R), or fully close and reopen the app.
  2. Open the summary on another device or in the web app. If it loads there, the first app’s cached view is the problem.
  3. Sign out and back in.
  4. Turn off browser extensions that block scripts or trackers for chatgpt.com and try again.
  5. Wait. OpenAI says deletions and memory updates can take time to propagate.
  6. Still stuck after a day: contact support from the help menu in ChatGPT.

Don’t use Delete and turn off memory as a reset unless you mean it: it deletes what the summary shows and switches memory off.

It doesn’t remember something

  • It wasn’t judged worth keeping. OpenAI says memory doesn’t retain every detail; ChatGPT decides what’s relevant. If it matters, say “Remember that…” so it becomes a saved memory.
  • It isn’t relevant to this question. ChatGPT only pulls in context when it expects it to help. Mention the topic or ask it to use what it knows about you.
  • It’s in the wrong place. A fact from a Project chat with project-only memory won’t show up outside it.
  • The source is gone. Deleting the chat, file or connected app can remove what it learned from them.

It remembers something wrong or out of date

Tell it in chat (“That’s out of date: I left that job in June”), or correct the memory summary directly where your account allows editing. Don’t mention this again stops it bringing a detail up but doesn’t delete the source. For old facts that keep coming back, also delete the saved memory. Why AI memory goes stale explains why this keeps happening.

It won’t forget something

OpenAI is explicit that information can live in several places. To remove something completely, delete it from each:

  1. The saved memory (Settings › Personalization › Manage).
  2. The chat where you said it, including archived chats. Deleting the chat alone doesn’t delete a saved memory made from it.
  3. Files in your Library, and any connected app that holds it.

Turning off Reference chat history schedules what was learned from past chats for deletion within 30 days. OpenAI may keep logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days.

Memory for work context

Most memory frustration comes from asking it to hold work: which client, which project, what was decided on Tuesday’s call. ChatGPT memory is built for preferences and picks what to keep on its own, so work details are exactly what drops out.

Keep work context somewhere you control and let the assistant read it. Cachejay records what you see, say and decide on your Mac, files it by project, and keeps it current. ChatGPT can read it on Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and read-only on Pro; on Plus and Free, use it from Claude or another MCP app. See give ChatGPT context about your work and Cachejay for ChatGPT.

Questions

Why is my ChatGPT memory summary empty?

Usually because ChatGPT hasn’t built one yet: memory was only just turned on, there’s little chat history, or Reference chat history is off. OpenAI also says the summary is a high-level view that may leave details out, so a short summary isn’t proof memory is broken. Ask “What do you remember about me?” in a new chat to check what it can actually use.

Why is the ChatGPT memory summary stuck on “generating”?

OpenAI hasn’t documented a fix. What helps in practice: reload the page (or fully close and reopen the app), sign out and back in, try another device, and wait a while, since OpenAI says memory updates can take time to propagate. If it’s still stuck after a day, contact OpenAI support from the help menu.

Why doesn’t ChatGPT remember what I told it?

The most common reasons: Memory or Reference chat history is off, the chat was a temporary chat (those never create memories), the chat is inside a Project with project-only memory, or ChatGPT decided the detail wasn’t worth keeping. OpenAI says memory doesn’t retain every detail of every conversation.

Does deleting a chat delete what ChatGPT remembers from it?

Not necessarily. OpenAI says saved memories are stored separately from chats, so delete the saved memory too. Turning Reference chat history off schedules what ChatGPT learned from past chats for deletion within 30 days.

Is ChatGPT memory different on Free and paid plans?

Yes. OpenAI says memory features and controls vary by plan, region, platform and workspace settings, and that a setting you can’t see may not be available on your account yet.
