Why you keep re-explaining yourself to AI (and how to stop)

The model got smarter, the context window got bigger, memory got switched on. And you still start half your chats by explaining who the client is and what happened on Tuesday's call. Here's why, and what fixes it.

Three kinds of context

What you explain to an AI falls into three kinds:

  • Who you are. Your role, your tone, how you like things. This rarely changes.
  • The work. The client, the goal, the constraints. This changes every few weeks.
  • What happened. What was said on the call, what you decided, what's waiting on whom. This changes every day.

Every assistant has a place for the first, and Projects or Gems for the second. The third has no home, and it's what you retype.

Why memory doesn't cover it

Memory in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini keeps what came up in your chats with that assistant. That's the problem: most of your work doesn't happen in a chat. The scope change was on a Zoom call. The new deadline was in an email. The decision was in Slack. The assistant remembers what you told it last month, and not that any of it changed. We wrote more on that in why AI memory goes stale.

More assistants, more retelling

Most people now use more than one: ChatGPT for writing, Claude Code for building, Gemini on their phone, Cursor at work. Each keeps its own memory, so you tell the same story to each. And agents that work on their own for an hour make it worse, because when they're missing context they stop and wait for you (when your agent needs you).

What fixes it

The fix isn't a better summary in each assistant. It's one record of your work, kept as it happens, that every assistant can read. That's what we built Cachejay to be. It keeps your calls without a bot, the text of what you read and write on your Mac, and a page per project rewritten as decisions change. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Cursor and Codex read it over MCP. You say “where did we leave Acme?” and get the answer with its source, instead of writing the answer yourself.

You still write down who you are, once. Everything after that is kept for you.

Questions

Why do I keep having to explain things to AI?

Because most of what it needs happened somewhere it can’t see: calls, other apps, other chats. Memory features keep what you told that assistant, not what happened since.

Will better AI memory fix it?

It helps with preferences. It can’t remember a call it wasn’t on. Something has to keep your work as it happens, in a form every assistant can read.

Does this work across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?

Yes. Cachejay connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, Codex and other agents, so they all read the same context.
