Gemini memory not working? Every cause and the fix
Gemini forgot what you told it, the setting is missing, or the Saved info page has moved. Here is how Gemini’s memory works now, why it fails, and how to fix each case.
Checked against Google’s Gemini Apps Help on November 3, 2026: memory of past chats, managing what Gemini remembers and Memory summary. Google has renamed these features more than once, and menu names vary by app and account.
The parts of Gemini memory
“Memory” in Gemini is three separate things, and a guide that’s a few months old may use different names:
- Memory: Gemini learning from your past chats. It used to be called past chats.
- Instructions for Gemini: what you write down for it to apply to every chat. Older pages call this Saved info.
- Memory summary: a view of what Gemini has learned about you, with a history of what changed and when.
All of them now sit under Personal Intelligence in settings. On the web, that’s Settings at the bottom left of gemini.google.com. In the mobile app, tap your profile picture.
The two-minute check
- Is Memory on? Settings › Personal Intelligence › Memory.
- Is Keep Activity on? Google says memory isn’t available when it’s off, because memory reads the chats saved there.
- Which account are you in? It needs a personal Google Account. Work, school and supervised accounts don’t get it, and you must be 18 or over.
- Where are you chatting? Memory works in the Gemini mobile and web apps, Gemini in Chrome and on smartwatches, but not in certain features such as Gems and Live chats.
- Was it a Temporary Chat? Those exist so that Gemini doesn’t remember the conversation or use it to personalize later ones.
- Ask it. “What do you know about me?” shows what it holds. After an answer, “Did you use any info from past chats?” shows whether it looked.
The setting is missing
If you can’t find Memory or Memory summary at all, it’s probably availability, not a bug. At the time of writing, Google’s help says:
- Memory summary is for US users with an active Google AI plan, in English, in the mobile app and at gemini.google.com.
- Its page on managing memory says the memory feature is currently US-only and needs a Google AI plan, while anyone can add instructions.
- Its personalization overview says these features “are not available to everyone at this time”.
Google’s pages don’t all list the same requirements, so go by what your own settings show. If Memory isn’t there, Instructions for Gemini is the fallback: whatever you add applies to every chat, and it’s under your control.
It doesn’t remember something
- You never told it to keep it. Memory picks up what seems useful. To be sure, say “Remember that I…”, or add it to your instructions.
- It’s in a Gem. Memory doesn’t apply there. Put the facts in the Gem’s instructions and files, and update them when things change.
- The chat is long. In a very long conversation, older messages can fall out of what Gemini is actually reading. Start a new chat and restate what matters.
- The source was deleted. Deleting a chat in Gemini Apps Activity stops Gemini personalizing from it, after a short delay.
- You’re on a different Google account. Memory belongs to the account, so check the profile picture before assuming it’s lost.
If Saved info seems to have vanished entirely, look under Personal Intelligence › Instructions for Gemini first. It’s most likely been moved and renamed rather than deleted.
It remembers something wrong or out of date
Correct it in the chat: “Actually, my daughter is 8, not 7.” You can also edit by prompt in Memory summary (“Add to my memory that I speak Japanese”), and Memory history at the top right shows what changed and when.
To get rid of a topic, Google warns that asking it to forget “doesn’t always work perfectly”. Delete the related chats in Gemini Apps Activity as well. To stop it learning altogether, turn Memory off under Personal Intelligence. Why AI memory goes stale explains why this keeps happening.
Memory for work context
Most Gemini memory frustration comes from asking it to hold work: this week’s calls, which client said what, a decision that changed on Tuesday. Memory is built around preferences and what came up in Gemini, and it’s limited on work accounts, so that’s exactly what drops out.
Keep work context somewhere you control and let Gemini read it. Cachejay records what you see, say and decide on your Mac, files it by project and keeps it current. It connects as a custom app in Gemini, which Google allows on personal accounts in the US, in English, with Keep Activity on. See Cachejay for Gemini, how to make Gemini remember you and how to stop pasting context into Gemini. Having the same trouble elsewhere? ChatGPT memory not working covers that one.
